“Once Enslaved, Once Slaveholder 2024 Lewellen Family Reunion”
Presented by: Beverly Bevel
African American genealogy during or before slavery, makes research difficult if not impossible, prior to the 1870 US Census
With over 10Million men, women and children kidnapped from the African landscape, these innocent humans thrust into a chattel system that :
• promoted the constant sale and breakup of families
• provided no surnames or birthdates
• made it illegal for slaves to read or write
This system and manner of governing makes it impossible for historians and genealogist to recover family lineage, research personal stories and identify African kindship.
Today’s presentation provides an insight into the Once Enslaved , Once Slaveholder lineage and history and their quest to meet and reconcile their common history as a family.
Today, we will speak life into each Lewellen enslaved person.
